China hopes to achieve balance in pork supply and demand
China's pork market may beat expectations with balanced supply and demand during the upcoming Chinese New Year, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, according to Xinhua News.
Increased pork import, stacked hogs to hit shelves and reserved pork released from government and commercial inventory will expand supply for the staple meat during the holidays, one the high-ranked officials in the ministry told in a press conference.
Increased production in poultry, beef and mutton is also expected to stabilize the meat market in the country for the next couple of months. China also reported a small increase in pig output in November and the government has presented a three-year plan to restore hog production. However, next year the bio-security crisis in the country is expected to reach its peak driving up meat imports to levels never seen before.
