China has lifted the ban on French beef imports

China has banned beef imports from France starting with 2001 when the country was hit by a mad cow disease outbreak. According to the French Ministry of Agriculture, a last step remains to be taken: the competent Chinese administration (CNCA) must approve the French companies candidates for export, after the health inspection conducted in France from April 30 to May 9.

The Chinese and French presidents have signed a joint declaration in Beijing on January 9, 2018, the export procedure was accelerated so that the shipments of French beef could be launched to the Chinese market as early as July 2018.

Thus, France will start exporting this month beef from cattle under 30 months of age, boneless, frozen or chilled, whole or chopped.

After Ireland, Netherlands and Denmark, France becomes the fourth EU country to receive approval for beef exports to China.

According to Reuters, China is now the second largest beef importer in the world. In 2017, the country imported approximatively 700,000 tonnes of beef, worth $3.3 billion. The volume of beef imported has risen by 20% on yearly basis.
