Chile reveals its self as a promising market for Vietnamese tuna

Vietnamese has found a new market for tuna in South America, Chile's imports of canned/processed tuna increasing sharply in the first quarter of this year by 1,376% compared with the same period of 2017.
Canned tuna stands for only 46% of the exports to Chile, the rest being tuna loins/fillets that accounts for the rest of the value of $2.9 million representing the tuna exports to Chile in the first three months of this year.
"In 2017, Chile imported more than 60 thousand MT of tuna, worth by US$82 million, up 285% in volume and 30% in value over the same period in 2016. In early 2018, tuna imports into this country continue to increase", declared Van Ha, a specialist on tuna market for Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
Thailand, Ecuador, Spain, China and Vietnam were the top five largest tuna suppliers to the South American country in 2017. Nevertheless, Thailand, Ecuador, China and Vietnam benefit from a 0% duty on canned tuna, while Spanish products bear a 4% tariff.
Both Chile and Vietnam are countries that are part of the Comprehensive and Progressive Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), a deal that could easily open the path for larger volumes of seafood exports for Vietnamese producers.
