CLITRAVI urges EC to protect the single market
European meat producers are highly dependent on the existence of the single market across the bloc, signals CLITRAVI, the professional association, in its latest message to the European Commission. A video conference is programmed to take place in the following weekes between the executive board of the association and EC representatives. "Any disruption in the single market it would be a nightmare for countries highly dependent on meat supplies from other EU member states, such as Romania, Greece or Bulgaria. As an example, at this point, Romania imports 70% of the pork consumed in the domestic market. That's why we consider the Commission has to secure the existence of the single market for now and in the future", said CLITRAVI vice president Dana Tanase, also Executive Director of the Romanian Meat Processors Association (ARC).
At the same time, CLITRAVI seeks solutions for the meat processing companies that used to deliver their products in the foodservice sectors. "Except Sweden, which kept the restaurants open, all the countries in the EU are hit by the closure of foodservice. France especially is feeling the pain of this unusual situation, with a significant drop in sales. We are also concerned about the fast pace of change in consumption habits across the EU. There's a decline in sales of fresh products of 20% to 25% reported by almost every country. At the same time, processors are facing higher costs with measures adopted to protect their employees and low productivity due to social distancing in the processing plants. We hope that the EC is taking seriously our recommendation to declare the food sector as a strategic industry inside the European Union", Mrs. Tanase said in an interview for EuroMeat News.
According to the association, a discussion with Commissioner Thierry Breton is to take place in the next couple of weeks to seek solutions to protect the integrity of the single market.
