Brazilian beef exports to Russia increases, drop in shipments to Iran
In February, beef exports from Matto Grosso, Brazil's largest beef producer state, to Russia have reached 2,360 tonnes, increasing by 474% compared to the same month a year ago. Meantime, volumes shipped to Iran (640 tonnes) have sharply dropped by 86%, according to figures presented by Instituto Mato-Grossense de Economia Agropecuaria (IMEA).
Brazilian beef has lost a large share in the Russian market over the ban imposed between 2017 and 2018 and the volumes exported after that were small. Now, the situation looks much more favorable for trade between the two parts, with Russian producer Miratorg reporting last month that it has become the first Russian beef exporter in the Brazilian market. Within the framework of HoReCa, Miratorg will provide Brazil with over 13 tons of products, including traditional cuts for Churassco as well as premium ribeye and other steaks.
However, the drop in shipments to the Iranian market reflects a trend that was easy to anticipate since late 2019, when Iranian officials say that the country doesn't need red imports for the rest of the Iranian year (March 2020) thanks to increased production. "As has been the case in the past, 10% of the country’s red meat demand has been met via imports while 90% is met domestically. However, proper climate conditions and a rise in livestock breeding have provided an opportunity for the country to fully meet its red meat demand this year," said Saeed Soltani, director-general of the Central Union of Animal Husbandry.
In 2019, Iran was the third export market for beef producers in Matto Grosso, after Egypt and China.
