Bird flu outbreak at the largest turkey farm in Romania
"From January 26, immediately after the announcement of the suspicion, the Local Operational Unit of the Veterinary Sanitary and Food Safety Directorate (DSVSA) Brasov was activated, which took the first measures to isolate the outbreak. At the same time, the Local Disease Control Center (CLCB) from Brasov county and neighboring counties was activated, as well as the Central Operational Unit, led by the president of the National Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA), Dr. Alexandru Nicolae Bociu. A team of specialists from the ANSVSA, led by vice-president Danut Pale, went to the farm in question, to participate in the epidemiological investigation and supervise the application of procedural measures, which aim to prevent the spread of the virus", it is shown in the press release sent by ANSVSA.
A protection and surveillance zone was delimited around the outbreak, so that severe restrictions on the movement of people, animals and means of transport were taken within a radius of at least 10 km.
There are 9 other commercial poultry farms in the protection zone and 15 in the surveillance zone, which are permanently monitored through clinical inspections and sample collection.
The veterinary health services, together with the County Police Inspectorate and the County Gendarmerie Inspectorate of Brasov, have restricted the access roads to the farms.
Also, mixed teams formed by specialized personnel from the Veterinary Sanitary and Food Safety Directorate of Brasov, Prahova, Covasna, Sibiu, Arges, Dambovita, Buzau, Harghita, Mures and inspectors of the Romanian Police were formed, based on the Cooperation Protocol regarding the performance of joint control actions regarding compliance with sanitary and veterinary legislation and for food safety.
Controls were intensified in the vicinity of the State Border Crossing Points on the commercial routes through which the intra-community exchanges of live birds, poultry meat and eggs for consumption and hatching are carried out, between Romania and other EU member states where avian flu is developing.
The current epidemiological evolution of the bird flu in Europe indicates an increased viral pressure, with outbreaks being recorded, as follows: Poland - 32, France - 27, Czech Republic - 11, Germany - 7, and cases in wild birds: Germany - 40, Austria - 33, Belgium - 20, which determines the intensification of the surveillance and monitoring of domestic and wild birds which represent, according to the legislation and specialized studies, the natural source of the avian flu virus.
At this point, the situation is under control, all measures have been taken to combat the outbreak and there is no possibility of affecting the health of the population.
A secondary outbreak of avian influenza with subtype H5N1 was confirmed at another turkey farm, Bravcod SRL - F1( 44 477 birds), on the Codlea zootechnical platform, located in the immediate vicinity of the farm where the primary outbreak was diagnosed, and a new suspicion of the presence of this virus appeared at another turkey farm, Bravcod SRL - F5, which belongs to the same economic agent informed the Veterinary Sanitary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA).
