Belgium meat consumption has dropped by 10 kilos

Belgium meat consumption has declined by 8.9% between 2010 and 2019, according to data issued by Statbel. In 2010, per capita consumption of meat stood at 82.4 kilograms, while now it is 70.2 kilos. Beef has fallen by 19.5% over this time, followed by poultry (-13.6%), mutton and goat (-11.8%). Pork consumption has decreased only by 2.4% since 2010.
At the same time, the consumption of edible offal has increased by 6.5% over the same period. The factors that influenced this change in consumption are as follows: impact on the environment, the consideration of animal welfare as well as various ethical and social considerations.
The trend is reversed from the rest of the EU, where meat consumption has increased by 4.7 kilos between 2013 and 2019. However, despite the drop in consumption, Belgian meat production has not decreased as farmers are taking advantage of the international markets to compensate for the drop in domestic consumption. According to DeStandaard newspaper, 50% of Belgian meat is exported.
