Belgium: Slight decrease in the apparent consumption of meat in 2022
As a reminder, the apparent consumption of meat corresponds to the amount of meat available on the market in a given year in relation to the number of inhabitants. It does not correspond to the actual consumption of meat per capita. It is expressed in kg of carcass weight equivalent.
The supply balance sheet for meat is established based on the net production (slaughtering) of the various sectors, among others. In the past year, net meat production (slaughtering) decreased by 6.8% compared to 2021. This overall net production is the lowest recorded since 2010.
This decrease affects all animal species: -3.6% for bovine animals, -9.5% for pigs, -17.8% for sheep and goats, -12.9% for horses, -1.3% for poultry and -7.6% for other animal species.
