Beef producers received 18 percent less for their cattle in 2022
In contrast, the industries managed to place meat at an average price 5.5% higher, going from $4,892 a ton in 2021 to $5,161 a ton in 2022. Despite this, meatpackers exerted constant pressure throughout of the year to keep prices low for the livestock producer.
According to statistics from the Meat Commission of the Rural Association of Paraguay, the price of the steer closed 2022 at $3.10 per kilogram (hook weight), which represented a level of 18% lower than the end of 2021.
High costs and low prices greatly reduced ranchers' margins last year. This, added to the climatic problems that have been dragging on for some years, had a direct impact on the livestock stock, which in 2022 registered a drop of close to 3% to reach 13.5 million heads.
Between January and December 2022, beef exports were US$ 1,722.3 million, which represents a growth of 8% compared to the US$ 1,598.9 million entered in the same period of time of the previous year, according to the statistics from the National Animal Health and Quality Service (SENACSA).
Regarding the volume, in the accumulated January-December 2022, 333,700 tons of bovine meat were exported, which corresponds to an increase of 2% in relation to the 326,698 tons sold in 2021.
Exports of products and by-products of animal origin generated some US$2,197.4 million in revenue in 2022, corresponding to a growth of 8.5% compared to the US$2,026.9 million invoiced in 2021.
In 2022, 608,975 tons of livestock products were shipped, which showed an increase of 1.5% in relation to the 600,208 tons exported in the previous year. The average export price registered an improvement of close to 7%, going from $3,377 per ton in 2021 to $3,608 per ton in the recently concluded year.
