Avicosan studies tools for detecting defects in chicken carcasses
Avicosan, a company that works as a slaughterhouse, cutting room, packaging and calibration of poultry products, is studying different non-invasive technological tools for the detection of myopathies and defects in chicken carcasses. In addition, the development of this solution will allow progress in the study and reduction of the incidence of this problem.
These works are framed in the DetRed-Miopaties Operative Group, led by Avicosan, which has the participation of IRTA for the development of this novel detection tool, which is of special relevance for the poultry sector, since meat with myopathies It is not suitable for the cutting market nor for the production of certain meat products.
In this context, the poultry sector is currently undergoing an intense process of researching solutions to address this problem. Some industries detect and classify these defects using visual and manual inspection; but it is a slow, subjective procedure that implies an increase in costs. Therefore, the industry needs to find inspection systems that are precise and (semi-)automatic, as well as capable of working at high speeds.
GO DetRed-Miopaties is a project financed through Operation 16.01.01 of Cooperation for innovation of the Rural Development Program of Catalonia 2014-2022, promoted by the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda and the European Agricultural Fund of Rural Development.
This project is part of the Vall Companys agri-food group's Research, Development and Innovation plan, which last year allocated 0.6% of its turnover to R&D projects, with a total of 13.5 million euros.
