Avian flu reaches Bulgaria
Bulgaria reported the first case of avian flu in 10 months, on a duck farm near Rakovski, in southern Bulgaria. The announcement was made by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, who reported an outbreak of the H5N8 bird flu virus on the farm. near 6,000 ducks are to be culled after the highly pathogenic virus was discovered.
This is the first case of avian flu reported by Bulgaria in the last 10 months. A 3-kilometer protection zone had been set around the farm. Authorities also have banned the movement of birds within the protection zone as well as the sale of eggs and poultry from the area.
The southern province of the country has seen a massive culling of birds in October 2018, when the authorities have culled more 100,000 chickens and 16,000 ducks to prevent the spread of the disease.
The H5N8 bird flu has been reported in Poland, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Germany.
