Australia's ban on Japanese beef imports finally lifted
Japanese beef exports are expected to rise once again after the Australian authorities have decided to lift the ban that was imposed in 2001 because of an outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease).
Japan has been urging the Australian authorities to lift the ban since 2004. Only facilities that receive approval from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare will be able to export their products to Australia.
According to Nikkei Asian Review, the minister of Agriculture, Ken Saito, Australians consume an average of 20.9 kilos of beef per person each year and the Japanese government is looking to promote Japanese beef amongst them along with different preparation methods for this type of meat.
