Argentine could start sending meat to Mexico

According to the National Service for Agrifood Health and Quality of the South American nation (Senasa), they will carry out comprehensive inspection tasks and 28 processing plants and livestock production units will be visited.

Four groups will be formed for the audit, which will examine:

  • The Argentine antigen bank.
  • The official laboratory where work is carried out on the foot-and-mouth disease vaccine.
  • Rural establishments.
  • The local offices of Senasa.
  • Border controls with Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia.
  • Plants that have made requests for export.

The Meat Exporters Consortium (ABC) explained to Argentine media La Nación that the industry has worked hard for a long time to open up the Mexican market, so they have great expectations of this comprehensive inspection.

Hector Alejandro Garza Garza, president of the Mexican Association of Meat Producers (AMEG), commented in a recent interview, that the organization is in favor of free trade, however, it is essential that health be considered in the negotiations as the main point of focus, since Argentine is certified as free of foot-and-mouth disease by the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO).
