Argentina may limit beef exports to stop inflation
Beef exports from Argentina may see a decline in the following months as the current administration announced that a meat export registration system that was used during the 2008-2015 period is now re-established.
The registration of beef exports and limits on shipments were imposed during the 2008-2015 administrations of former President Cristina Fernandez but were scrapped by her successor Mauricio Macri. Currently, Cristina Fernandez serves as vice president and head of the Senate, under Alberto Fernandez's administration. "We express our most absolute rejection of the reinstatement of the export registry, in this case for meat, and other interventionist measures. Behind these measures hides the mistaken view that the generalized rise in prices responds to the fact that the food market presents tensions between exports and the domestic market," the farm sector said in a statement issued by the country’s main rural organizations, quoted by Al Jazeera. Over the last couple of years, Argentina increased its beef exports to China, becoming one of the largest suppliers in the Chinese beef market. More than 75% of the beef exported by the South American country was shipped to China, according to official data. More than 1.5 million tonnes of beef were exported by Argentina between January 2019 and January 2021 around the world. At the same time, domestic consumption is dropping due to high prices and a change in culinary habits. For the next 10 years, beef consumption is expected to drop from the current level of 50 kg to 40 kg per person. 90% of the gap will be captured by pork, according to experts.
