Argentina enters the Chinese sheepmeat market

Argentina has shipped the first batch of sheepmeat to China, announced the Ministry of Agriculture. 21 tonnes of frozen bone-in sheepmeat from the province of Santa Cruz has been shipped last week to China, confirmed Minister Luis Basterra. He also emphasized that "the quality and safety of Argentine food allow us to continue expanding exports."
Chinese authorities have conducted a careful control on the entire chain of production of Argentinian sheepmeat, comprising the supply of the raw material, its slaughter process, storage, truck loading and the export certification of the merchandise before releasing the export certificate for Frigorífico Montecarlo, the first Argentinian sheepmeat producer approved for export to the Chinese market.
The South American country has a large program to develop the sector and to encourage the population to consume more sheepmeat. Currently, per capita consumption of sheepmeat is slightly above 1.5 kg and the export volumes are also low, despite the fact that, before becoming a large beef producer, Argentina was renowned as a major sheepmeat producer. However, the Chinese sheepmeat market it is almost covered by the domestic production due to large investments in the sector made in the last couple of years to reduce the deficit of animal protein created by the ASF crisis.
