Americas work together to combat the ASF expansion
PPA (ASF) Latam a group formed by Latin American nations, now has members of the US swine industry; to expand continental action in disease prevention. Since August 2021, ASF outbreaks were reported in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, a situation that triggered alerts in both North America and South America as well.
The group formed by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) and 20 other national organizations from 18 Latin American countries to outline African Swine Fever (ASF) prevention strategies this week gained an important reinforcement: the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), an entity representing the pig industry in the United States, became a member of the continental crisis committee.
With the reinforcement of the NPPC, the group should strengthen the integration and alignment of work to prevent the entry of the disease in the continental area of ??the Americas.
Currently, there are records of ASF in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, located on the Island of Hispaniola. Like Brazil and other nations on the continent, the United States has been supporting the two countries in their efforts to eradicate the outbreaks.
With the accession of the NPPC, the group – previously PPA Prevention Latam – is renamed “Prevention PPA America” in allusion to the African Swine Fever (PPA in Spanish) prevention campaign throughout the American continent.
“The recent occurrences of the disease in countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and on the island of Hispaniola show the importance of the prevention work that is already underway in the various countries of the Americas. Maintaining the health status of the continent is a priority, and all organizations are committed to this purpose”, details Sulivan Alves, technical director of ABPA, one of the founders of the group.
The entry of NPPC was approved by the group during the second half of December. The committee “Prevention PPA America” has been discussing new actions for the strategic agenda for 2022, in disease prevention.
As a result, the group now has the following countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Ecuador, United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.
