Almost 30,000 chickens culled in Germany

29,000 chickens were culled in Germany, on a farm in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state, after the H5N8 virus was discovered in birds. The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state government decided to institute a 10-kilometre observation area, covering 482 nearby farms with about 644,000 poultry.
A series of outbreaks of bird flu have been reported in Europe in recent weeks, with wild birds suspected to be spreading the illness.

The disease has been found in countries including France, the Netherlands, Germany, Britain, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Sweden and Poland, after severely hitting Russia, Kazakhstan and Israel. According to OIE, more than 1.6 million birds have been culled in the EU, the largest damage being reported by Poland, with 900,000 birds on a single poultry unit.
In Russia, authorities have culled 1.8 million birds since October, with 1.6 million being from a single farm in the vicinity of Kazakh border. During the winter of 2016/2017, the same virus has impacted the poultry production in several European countries.
