ASF outbreak reported in large Polish piglet farm

An African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak was reported in a large piglet farm in Poland, near the east border of Germany. Polish authorities have confirmed the outbreak in a farm with 20,000 piglets and sows in the province of Lubuskie, close to the German border, informs Farmer magazine. This is the first ASF outbreak reported this year in Poland and the news has stirred panic among pig farmers in the region, who are afraid that piglets bought recently from the infected farm may have the virus.
The farm had very high standards of biosecurity, according to sources from the region. Nevertheless, that raises the question of how long it will take the virus to spread to other European countries such as Germany, Denmark or the Netherlands. At the end of 2019, Germany has declared a state of alert due to ASF outbreaks in wild boars reported in Poland, near the German border. Fences have been built pe prevent the movement of wild animals to Germany. At this moment, 14 countries in Europe are affected by the disease.
