ASF in Germany counts more than 2.000 cases

ASF cases in the wild boar population in Germany reached 2036. It is a year now since the first case was reported in areas bordering Poland and the virus seems to spread along the borderline causing big concerns for the swine industry in the country. In July, three outbreaks on small and medium pig farms in the state of Brandenburg.
The most recent additions to the list of infected districts are Barnim (July) and Uckermark (August), there are indications that the virus is spreading northwards, parallel to the Polish border. In fact, spread follows outbreaks across the border. In a straight line, the virus is now less than 30 km from the state's border with Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the third German state that borders Poland. So far, this is the only unaffected state in the area.
Authorities in the state of Saxony are ready to use trained dogs to detect wild animals that may carry the virus. Meantime, the number of cases is on the rise in Poland as well. 5,340 wild boars have died since the disease was first reported in the former communist country. At the same time, there are almost six years since Polish pig farms have been hit by the disease and outbreaks are periodically reported in different parts of the country. Since May, ten farms have been hit by ASF with thousands of pigs culled to prevent other outbreaks in the region.
