ASF cases in Germany are rising

The number of ASF cases in Germany is growing at a fast pace. There are 49 cases confirmed so far, after just three weeks from the first outbreak reported. The national reference laboratory, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), has confirmed all after the analysis of the corresponding samples. All of the latter cases are within the first major zone, and at the moment domestic pig populations on farms remain ASF free.
The authorities, which keep both the European Union and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and their commercial partners informed, continue to work on the construction of the containment fences to contain the outbreak. However, the fast evolution of epidemic has a different pattern from what was reported in Belgium, for example, where the number of cases in the first month were much lower.
ASF in Germany has put a a cap on pig meat prices in the European market, since the country has lost access to several Asian markets such as China, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines. The countries that are expected to benefit from the current ASF crisis in Germany are the US, Canada, Brazil and Spain, all four of them being large suppliers of pork in the Chinese market.
