ASF – Critical situation in Lower Saxony

With the outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) in three different federal states (Brandenburg, Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony), the epidemiological situation in Germany has now deteriorated overall, the commission said. Against this background, there is an increased risk of further ASF transmission in different and distant areas in Germany.

Combating animal diseases is a matter for the federal states, but the BMEL nevertheless supports the affected federal states with advice and action. Most recently, the BMEL in Brussels advocated that the efforts and protective measures in Lower Saxony be rewarded with a shorter deadline for the restricted zones.

In Lower Saxony, tens of thousands of healthy pigs from the ASF restriction areas have now reached their slaughter weight. The BMEL is working with the state authorities and slaughterhouses to find solutions to enable the slaughter and marketing of the meat products, which can be consumed without hesitation. The latter in particular is currently a problem, which is why slaughterhouses refuse to accept the meat.
