ABPA celebrates the qualification of new pork plants for the Peruvian market
Opened in January 2023 only for the state of Acre, the market is now the destination for products from eight new units authorized by the Ministry of Agrarian Development of Peru, located in the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina and São Paulo. In addition to the pork units, a poultry processing unit located in Rio Grande do Sul was authorized.
A country with annual production exceeding 220,000 tons, Peru imported 14,800 tons of protein in 2023. Most of it comes from Chile (57% of the total), followed by the United States (13% of the total) and Brazil (12% of the total).
"Peru has a relatively low per capita pork consumption, around 8.5 kilos per year, which indicates potential for growth in the sector. With more plants enabled, we have an excellent opportunity to expand our presence in this important market. This is yet another achievement led by the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, together with the Secretaries of International Relations, Luís Rua, and Agricultural Defense, Carlos Goulart, who in just two weeks of 2025 delivered three major pieces of news for the protein export sector, including advances in Mexico and Angola. The opening should further strengthen the capillarity of our exports throughout this year", says Santin.
