8 Belgian meat exporters are present at Indagra Food&Carnexpo 2019
Losses incurred after Belgian pork has been banned in several Asian markets due to the ASF outbreak in the wild boar population in Belgium has created some damages for the producers who are now looking to compensate by increasing their presence in several European markets such as Romania, Poland, Hungary or Bulgaria.
8 meat exporters from Belgium will be present at Indagra Food&Carnexpo this year, opening the trade fair in Bucharest with a B2B meeting on 30 October, followed by a cocktail party that evening. Belgian Pork Group, Debra-Meat, Groep De Brauwer, G. Van Landschoot & Zonen, Noordvlees Van Gool, Sopraco, Vannieuwenhuyse and Delavi will be present at the fair to host the "Belgian Meat Networking Day & Evening Cocktail" event along with Belgian Meat Office.
Sales of Belgian meat can accelerate in Romania as the country is currently facing a total block in pork exports in the EU market because it didn't present a strategy on combating the spread of the ASF virus to the European Commission. Also, developing existing markets in Europe for Belgian meat, especially pork, is important as Brexit is threatening to end in a no-deal scenario. "Belgium’s typical pig genetics result in relative heavy and lean carcasses, with an extraordinary yield. These advantages together with reliable quality assurance, traceability and high food safety standards. ASF is a threat to us all. In the wild population, it will be hard to control, especially in Eastern Europe. A no-deal Brexit is pernicious for trade, and so for the Belgian meat exporters. The UK is our 5th market and close enough to supply even several times a day. Only logistically, Brexit is a nightmare. We hope this worst-case scenario still can be avoided, " stated Joris Coenen, head of Belgian Meat Office, in an interview for EuroMeat News.
Currently, Romania has a rate of self-sufficiency in pork of 40%, the rest representing imports from other EU member states.
