8 Argentinian beef plants suspended from export to China

Eight Argentinian beef plants have been suspended from the list of meat exporters to China due to several cases of COVID-19 confirmed among their workers. "In the worst case, the suspension is 10 days. It's not something that would have a material effect," commented Miguel Schiaritti, head of Argentina's CICCRA meat industry chamber, for Reuters. Argentina has 96 meat plants allowed to export to China. The South American country is one of the main suppliers of beef in the Chinese market. Last year, more than 70% of the beef exported was shipped to China. In 2020, 76% from a total volume of 328,170 tonnes of bovine meat exported between January and May was sent in the Chinese market. At the beginning of July, Beijing officials have asked their Argentinian counterparts to offer guarantees on meat safety due to the increasing number of COVID-19 infections in the country. Argentinian Foreign Minister Felipe Sola declared that meat plants hit by the coronavirus will stay "close until the client has the most absolute guarantee. We do not want there to be any doubts."
