31 US meat plants approved for export to China
China is trying to add more US meat suppliers to its market. Starting next week, 31 new US meat processing plants have been granted access to the Chinese meat market for their pork, beef and poultry products, according to a note released by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC). This is the second decision taken in less than a month that allows a large group of US meat processors to enter the Chinese market. On April 8, GACC had already given permission for 19 other meat processing plants.
Besides trade politics that are under negotiations between Beijing and the new White House Administration, China is still under the impact of the ASF crisis that reduced its pig inventory by 40% in the last 3 years and the animal protein deficit in the domestic market is wide.
Also, since the middle of last year, with the worsening of the pandemic, China has changed its meat importing scheme and initiated a series of temporary suspensions of purchases from several countries. The need to increase health control as a result of covid-19 has been the reason unofficially alleged by the Chinese government, so more suppliers may better serve this plan.
