20 Brazilian meat plants banned by EU officials
The European Union has decided to suspend imports of Brazilian meat from 20 plants, mostly poultry producers. The announcement was not a very big surprise for the Brazilian counterpart as the corruption scandal that led to this situation is keeping all eyes on the South American nation.
Still, the losses are big, meat exports from this facilities to the EU market accounting for a 35% share in total meat exports. Agriculture Minister Blairo Maggi told reporters that the Brazilian authorities are considering a new round of negotiations to reverse the measure, reports Reuters.
Maggi recommended that Brazilian producers affected by the EU decision "will have to search for new markets to quickly substitute these exports."
12 of the facilities are owned by BRF, the largest poultry producer in the country, and the company investigated in a food safety case. The rest of 8 plants are owned by smaller companies and the second largest poultry producer in Brazil, JBS does not have any facilities affected by this measure, informs Nasdaq.
