1 million pigs blocked in German farms due to COVID-19 issues

There are about 1 million pigs ready to slaughter in Germany but the current situation on COVID-19 crisis impacting slaughterhouses is creating a backlog of hogs in farming units. The situation tends to become desperate for some farmers as the main export markets in Asia are closed and the supply in the EU market is more than the single market can absorb at this time.
At the same time, officials have announced that the number of ASF cases in wild boars has jumped over 300 this week. There are 4 zones in Eastern Germany affected by the virus but, so far, pig farms nearby haven't been impacted by the disease. Three of them are located in the state of Brandenburg and one in Saxony. 49 cases have been confirmed this month, 18 in the district of Gorlitz, Saxony and 31 in the district Markish-Oderland, Brandenburg.
Since September, German pork products have been banned in several large markets in Asia such as China, South Korea, Japan and the Philippines. Although the demand in some of the EU member states has increased, Germany still has approximately 300,000 tonnes of pork to place in the EU single market.
