China makes first live pig import in 12 months
In August, China has made its first breeding pig import in the last 12 months in an attempt to rebuild the herd owned by CP Pokphand, informs Reuters, quoting data from the Chinese Customs Administration.
906 breeding pigs were bought by the company from DanBred, a Danish genetics company, which is majority-owned by SEGES, the research arm of the Danish Agriculture and Food Council. The transaction was registered in the Customs database as worth 20.9 million yuan ($2.94 million). This is the first import of live pigs in the last 12 months made by a Chinese producer. Some analysts estimate that the national pig herd has been contracted by 50% since the first ASF outbreak was reported in China, in August 2018.
According to CP Pokphand chief executive Bai Shanlin, the company intends to reach 10 million head by 2021 from the current figure of 4 million pigs registered in its farms. CP Pokphand is the 5th largest producer of pork in China.
