€9 million for Germany to fight ASF

Germany expects to receive €9 million in EU funds to fight against the spreading of African Swine fever. The money will be used to build and maintain fences in the areas where the disease has already been discovered in the wild boar population, according to Agriculture Minister Julia Klockner. The allocation of this item has been made on the basis of the specified costs already incurred in the erection of fences since the appearance of the first ASF case last September.

In the fight against the spread of African swine fever, fences that delimit restricted areas are an important component. The construction and financing of this fence are the responsibility of the federal states, but the federal minister had promised the two affected states, Saxony and Brandenburg, that financial aid would be requested from Brussels. Request that has been answered positively by the EU. Since last autumn, multiple barriers have been erected at the border with Poland in a bid to stop wild animals from carrying the disease further in Germany.
