"Premium Red Baldy" program has started in the US

The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) and the American Hereford Association (AHA) have teamed up to create hybrid hifers called "Premium Red Baldy". The two breed associations are hoping to take advantage of hybrid vigour by cross-breeding Hereford and Red Angus genetics into "Premium Red Baldy" commercial females. Premium Red Baldy is only for heifers and is targeted at achieving the goals of breeding females for longevity, fertility, adaptability and efficiency.

The announcement was made by AHA Executive Vice President Jack Ward and RAAA CEO Tom Brink during the 2018 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show in Phoenix at the begging of this month.
"This new program will help producers access genetically verified females that are packed with heterosis and ready to go to work on farms and ranches all across the country. It all starts with the right cow traits, and Premium Red Baldy females will excel in that regard," said Brink, quoted by Drovers magazine.

To participate in the program producers must verify that eligible females are sired by AHA or RAAA registered and transferred sires. Bulls need to rank in the top 50 percent of their respective breed for AHA's Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$) or RAAA's Herdbuilder Index (HB).
